This past weekend we spent in Falun where my aunt and uncle live. Two of their five kids, Anna and Emma, were also there and we had a great time. My cousin Emma (who is also Hanna's godmother) has two kids and especially Nicklas loves babies. He even said that he'd rather we get a baby when we get home than a dog!
Eva and Styrbjörn (my aunt and uncle) had bikes for all of us so despite the weather (cold and rainy) we biked first to the ski jump tower where we climbed the steps and took an elevator up to the top of the tower. Beautiful view but incomprehensible that anyone would jump off with skis on! We had a picnic up there and then went off to our next adventure.
The Falun mine is a famous copper mine and part of the Unesco World Heritage (Världsnaturarvet.) We went on a tour down in the mine and it only got scary when they turned off the lights to show how completely dark it would get for the miners if they lost their torch. They had a very hard life. Dignitaries who visit the mine get to sign their names on the wall. Among them are the king, queen and crown princess of Sweden.
Since it was Sweden's national day, June 6, there was also a parade and some music. But as it was was cold we didn't stay very long and instead we biked home to another great dinner. On the way home Bob and I stopped by the town square where they were practicing for the night's concert. We saw Måns Zemmerlöf (famous Swedsih singer) upfront and heard him sing a few songs. The kids were jealous that they hadn't stayed too!
On Sunday we left Falun after a great weekend and stopped by Carl Larsson's home on our way back. Carl Larsson was a famous Swedish artist who lived in Dalarna and most of his paintings has motifs of his family and his home. Great ending to our fun time in Falun. Now we only hope for some warmer weather!
